Viruses and memories

Videos are viral too! Today's Talk of the Nation had a segment featuring viral videos... One with a lady in her underwear and a t-shirt dancing the hula with a Wii Fit game/video. (She was featured on the show too, and it was a great segment!) Watching that video and another with this man melting down in a hotel lobby sparked something within me totally unrelated to the viral video concept: The desire to meander memory lane via You Tube.

And I did.

I remembered old cartoons...

And how disappointed I was when the song wasn't included in the recent movie...

I remembered this oldie but goodie that pre-dated the Transformers. My sister and I used to get up at 6 a.m. to watch it on KTTV when we were kids... And this was way before KTTV became FOX...

It's easy to take short trips Back Down Memory Lane, as the old Minnie Riperton tune says. It used to be just photographs that would send me walking or skipping down The Lane. It was sometimes running into an old classmate at the mall, or an acquaintance who reminded me of another friend that actually used to be a "friend", but, of course, that was a couple of breakups ago.

There are the old toothpaste commercials that bring back memories, but it's mostly the old cartoon intros... some of the lyrics and tunes I still remember as if it were still 198... *ahem* ...that year.

And some of the memories are from years that were even before "that year..."

Well, I'm on video overload now... But the trip down Memory Lane was nice!

On Food and Eating

Every now and again, I let my feelings get the best of me, even though I know better.

Today… I didn’t feel like eating.

So I didn’t.

I don’t know why my appetite was acting funny. Every now and then, I just don’t feel like eating. This doesn’t happen on a regular basis, though, just when I’m stressed for some reason, really tired or sick.

Of course, humans cannot function properly if they don’t eat.

I am human. Have been for a while now.

So today, this human was extra-sleepy and had to fight to keep her eyeballs visible. Oh, I soooo wanted to lay my head down on my desk and snooze.

Wait. Let me be honest.

I wanted to curl up under my desk and get a good power nap and not care if anyone heard me snore.

You Betta Represent!
But alas, I represent my family, my school, my church, black folks, tall folks, folks with braids, folks with size 10 feet, single folks, folks with glasses, folks with seldom-worn contact lenses, graduate student-folks, and folks who love to wear sarongs… I didn’t want to be a poor representation of them, so I didn’t sleep.

El Bee Esses (lbs.)
I find it interesting that people joke about looking at a succulent cheese burger and gaining five pounds. If I don’t look at one, I’ll loose five. At lunch though, I ate about half a fruit salad, but it wasn’t enough to energize. I struggled through the day.

One Liner, or More
The next time I’m stressed and don’t feel like eating, I must recall the wise words of pop culture gastronomic mystic Weird Al Yankovic:

“Eat it,
Eat it!
Get yourself an egg and beat it!”

Scotus, Potus, Pimpin’ and Scrimpin’: A poetic mingling of jargon and slang

The SCOTUS made a 5-4 decision giving Gitmo prisoners some rights…

While Obama and McCain traipsed around

Getting support for the autumn POTUS fight…

I wish I had money for my clothes and car to be pimpin’*

But I am a student, gas costs too much

And my broke tail is scrimpin’.

The end

*please see entry #1, definitions 2 and 3. Also see entry #3 and totally ignore the ones having to do with sex and hoes... By the way, did you know that men can be hoes too? If not, you heard it here first! That blog rant is forthcoming.

Heat and Kitchens

Question
And I only have one: Why was it so durn hot today? O.K., I was indoors all day, but on my way out of the parking lot, I pressed a button on my car's clock to find out the temperature. It said 101 degrees.

Oh, I forgot to mention the time: 7:01...
p.m.

Yup.

It was hot today.

Of course I would expect temperature reading to be elevated because my vehicle was sitting in the sun all day... but 101 is still so hot...

The make you wanna bathe in ice cubes hot.
The make you wanna buy an ice sheet and matching polar ice cap (instead of a heating blanket) hot.
The make you wanna get some oil and fry an egg on the sidewalk hot.

One-liner
They say if one can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. But if the heat is everywhere including the kitchen, where is one to go?

Week One: Talk of the Nation

I woke up with a headache Monday morning. Ugh!
But I was determined to have a great day.
Regardless of the headache, things started out o.k.
The staff of TOTN were no strangers, since I decided to join them for their first Newseum broadcast a couple of months ago, shortly after I accepted their internship offer.

It was great seeing them again and re-learning names.

On day one, we had all the introductory meetings where we reviewed the information inside our intern folders and filled out paperwork.

We took photos, got our access and ID cards, and were dropped off to our departments. It was funny, because P.D. took the interns to their areas in groups and dropped us off... kind of reminded me of an afternoon school bus... albeit a walking school bus, where eager kiddies can't wait to get home... for us, what home will be for the next 10 weeks.

I had a desk, phone extension, e-mail address waiting. I'm impressed.

I admit I am overwhelmed. There is so much to learn, so much to get used to, so much to absorb, but watching the show live... It's such a wonderful piece of radio art. It's like an orchestra the way the pieces fit together to make a solid program.

Lesson Learned
Oh, I did learn a lesson this week. Actually, I must say I re-learned the lesson... She the need for comfortable shoes really hit home around 2001, when I first started teaching. I wore some cute mules to work one morning. By the end of that day, I stumbled into a Nordstrom Rack, almost in tears. I was determined to leave with a new pair of shoes on my feet, even if I had to kick a foot up on the checkout counter so the cashier could scan the price tag.

I wasn't quite crying after escorting guests from the Newseum's first floor to Knight Studio... but I realized that unless I'm on a runway, the same rule I used while teaching applies to journalism: comfort first, woman!

Surreal Moments
The most surreal time was Tuesday night. First of all, I couldn't believe I was heading back into the District during a thunderstorm with tornado warnings in Virginia. It always seems like I've been navigating the streets during every tornado warning lately! (Back to Tuesday night) TOTN had an election special, and of course it was a zinger because the final two primaries were that night. Watching Obama's speech... knowing he had more than enough delegates to clinch the nomination... A man of color... That was the most surreal thing. Even more humorous was reading a copy of his prepared speech during his delivery. Sometimes I just followed along. Other times, I just read ahead.

Never thought I'd see it. A man of color as a presidential nominee. Whether or not he wins the general election... History's been made. Even if Clinton were the nominee... still would've been history made.

One-liner
Anything great, whether it be a great radio show or running for president, starts with one element: an idea.
